MISinformation

On Checkology, I chose the lesson over misinformation because I felt it was the one I knew the least about since I was never informed about in middle or high school and I also feel it is important in todays society due to the amount of technology we each consume every day. The video went on to discuss the different types of misinformation. It also discussed the implications that spreading misinformation can cause in our society and us as individuals.

One of the first keywords explained was fake news that was described as a made-up story designed to appear as if it is from a legitimate news source. Another keyword that was discussed was disinformation, which was described as information intended to target a specific group with a particular goal in mind. Disinformation is usually spread to cause confusion for the viewer.

In the video, the different types of misinformation were also included such as satire, false context, imposter content, manipulated content, and fabricated content. I was unaware of all the types of misinformation and was quite surprised to hear about all the different ways that something can be considered misinformation. For example, satire is when information is spread using humor or exaggeration to mock a person, organization, or policy.

The video was very helpful when explaining the different types of misinformation that can be spread and showed examples that seemed to be situations that any of us could come across while online. It truly has helped me be more aware of the information that I am viewing and will be helpful when determining if the information is fake or not.

Personally, I think that I am slowly becoming more and more aware of information literacy. I have always been very skeptical of the information that I view online and will typically fact check anything that comes across my social media that appears to be fake.

  1. This was a popular option in class! There's such a fine line between helping our students become informed consumers of media and scaring them; especially when we're all trying to figure it out ourselves!
